Max's Kansas City

An Interview w/ Max's Insider Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin

The home for Songs That Saved Your Life Radio on WKNY 107.9FM where Jami explores the very queer roots of rock n roll and plays a lot of great music!

How one nightclub gave shelter to rebels and helped a generation of artists find their chosen family.

If I could go back in time to any place during any era of time, I would land myself at the doors of Max’s Kansas City in 1968. Anyone who knows me would fully understand my obsession for New York City’s music scene and specifically my love for the cultural significance of this venue. This was THE place to be if you wanted to be an artist or musician. So many legends began as nobodies here - Lou Reed, Patti Smith, the New York Dolls, Debbie Harry, the list goes on.

On this week’s episode, I dive into the history of Max’s Kansas City with Yvonne Sewall, who was there from the beginning. We talk about her book High on Rebellion, her life inside Max’s, her nonprofit that’s keeping the spirit of Max’s alive through a new generation of artists, and what she has planned for the club’s 60th anniversary.

Music in this episode includes songs from the Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Suicide, Blondie, the Ramones, Patti Smith, and many more.
