October is LGBT History Month. Since we’re an LGBT history music show, every day is a reason to celebrate.
We're going back, as we often do, to the early 80s, an era that produced so many queer bands like the Pet Shop Boys, Bronski Beat, Frankie Goes to Hollywoood, Soft Cell, and Dead or Alive to name just a few. So, if you like those bands, tune in as we crank up the volume on one of my favorite eras of music and celebrate an androgynous icon, Boy George.
Boy George, born George Alan O’Dowd became a seminal figure in pop music but also a symbol of androgyny and self-expression in the 1980s. His unique style and unapologetic persona challenged traditional gender norms and provided a beacon of visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.
Music in today’s episode include songs by Bronski Beat, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead or Alive, Bow Wow Wow, Pet Shop Boys, Lou Reed, and Mark Ronson.
