Exploring Hip Hop’s historical tensions with queerness and the legacy of representation from Queen Latifah to Doechii.
Hip Hop celebrated its 52nd birthday on August 11th. This week on Songs That Saved Your Life, we’re diving into the history of Hip Hop—its origins, its evolution, and its complicated relationship to queerness. I invited my Radio Kingston colleagues, Micah and Lotus, the brilliant hosts of Hip Hop 101, to join me for this conversation. Together, we trace the Golden Era of Hip Hop, share some of our favorite tracks, and reflect on the culture’s ongoing tension between celebration and exclusion. We also highlight the trailblazing role of Queen Latifah, who helped pave the way for today’s openly queer artists like Doechii and Lil Nas X.
Music in this episode includes tracks from Fatback Band, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Kurtis Blow, De La Soul, Rapsody, Doechii and more.
